The PossePlus Retreat is a space where students, faculty, and staff come together to discuss a topic relevant to our community. Every year, The Posse Foundation and Posse Scholars facilitate an annual weekend-long PossePlus Retreat attended by members of the larger student body, faculty and administration, with the goal of discussing an important campus issues identified by Posse Scholars. During each PossePlus Retreat weekend, a cross section of the campus community — students, faculty and administrators — come together to talk about the topic on a national, campus and personal level. By creating a safe space for dialogue between campus community members who may not ordinarily interact with one another, retreats today have become an important forum to engage in social, cultural and political issues Last year, we gathered to discuss “The State of Leadership.” We considered our roles as leaders on our campuses and in our world during a trying period of separation. At the end, we committed to leading and building inclusive communities that are better prepared to support their members during challenging times. This year, things look very different. We’ve returned to our campuses, some of us for the first time, and are recreating what it means to be a collective and to be a community. With the rise of an anti-racist movement in the U.S., a changed political landscape in Washington, and the radical shifts to our way of life due to Covid-19, so much is different. This year, right now, we all have an opportunity to rethink, reinvent, and restore our communities. How do we work together to create new and inclusive norms? How do we find time to invest in each other while also taking care of ourselves? How can our campus community move forward together? How do the policies, practices, and cultural forces of the day create opportunities for transformation? And, finally, what is our responsibility to each other?
