Description

Tour the Historic Bark Shanty/Aitkin House Tour the historic Bark Shanty/Aitkin House. Built in 1853, it was one of the first homes built in Port Sanilac and is one of the oldest still standing. Tours will be limited to 30 minutes and to groups of six at a time. Haven't you always wanted to see the inside of this home that was built on the site of the original bark shanty? In about 1830, lumbermen came to the area to peel bark from Hemlock trees to use in tanning leather. They built a bark shanty for shelter, which was basically a lean-to. The point became known to mariners because the lumbermen kept a huge fire going at all times that was clearly visible from the lake. Since they were lumbering and making bark shingles, there was always plenty of firewood. This shanty became a landmark to sailors on Lake Huron and they called the place Bark Shanty Point. The home's owners have offered the house to the Sanilac County Historical Society (SCHS). The SCHS is currently holding a pledge drive to raise $75,000 in pledges to help cover the costs of moving the house, setting it on a new foundation, and renovating it. If we are unsuccessful in reaching this goal by February 1, the house, unfortunately, will be demolished. In which case, this will likely be your last chance to ever tour the historic Bark Shanty/Aitkin House. Masks suggested. Our volunteers will be masked. Be certain to arrive on time. Your ticket is valid for 30 minutes only and begins at the time printed on your ticket, regardless of your late arrival. All funds raised from tour ticket sales will support the Bark Shanty/Aitken House project. In the event that we fall short of our $75,000 goal, the funds will then be transferred to the Sanilac County Historical Society's general fund. If you find value in preserving the Bark Shanty/Aitkin House and moving it to the Museum, please make a pledge here: https://fs12.formsite.com/gxZYoN/9hcpcgxcai/index.html
