Schools Honoring MLK With Essay/Poster Contest

LONG BEACH, NY — In commemoration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Long Beach schools are holding a special essay contest. The city of Long Beach is asking students all of ages to help honor the legacy of the civil rights icon by submitting a poster or essay. The contest is open to students in elementary, middle and high schools. Elementary schools students can create a poster reflecting on King's ideas, while middle school students have the option of either entering a poster or the essay contest, up to 300 words. High school students can submit essays up to 500 words. Posters must be at least 8 1/2 x 11, but no larger than 22" x 28" poster board and all art must ve a student's original creation. The theme is "More Than a Dream." Students are asked to reflect on King's life, philosophy and impact on society. Other points to explore: How does civil rights and diversity affect your life and how can we help continue the dream of Dr. King, the city posted on its website. Judging will be based on interpretation of theme, technical skill and originality. The deadline for entries is Jan. 17.
