Description
WEST HAVEN, CT — (Pictured, from left): Mayor Nancy R. Rossi, Sammy Rivera, the owner of Budget Transmission Center and Budget Car Wash on Route 1, and Jhonnathan Rivera, a board member of the Puerto Rican Festival of New Haven, portray the Magi — the wise men who brought gifts to the infant Jesus at Epiphany — at West River Hall in Allingtown on Thursday.
Rossi and both Riveras, no relation, helped distribute free toys to 150 children at West Haven's celebration of Three Kings Day, a tradition in Spanish-speaking countries and part of the city's outreach efforts to the Hispanic American community.
The holiday marks the arrival of the three kings — Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar — in Bethlehem.
Members of the Puerto Rican Festival, including board President Joe Rodriguez, collected toys for the grab-and-go event, which was also presented by the West Haven Hispanic American of the Year Alumni Association.
Among those also donating toys were Sammy Rivera, West Haven's 2021 Hispanic American of the Year, along with City Hall employees and West Haven firehouses.
