Description

Press release from the New Orleans Fire Department: January 3, 2022 On Monday, January 3, 2022 at 8:39 pm the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) received a call reporting a possible boat fire near the intersection of Patterson Rd. and Wiltz St. in Algiers. When the first NOFD company arrived on the scene at 8:52 pm, firefighters encountered a large portion of wharf already heavily involved in flames. Fire crews ran hose lines across the Mississippi River levee in an attempt to reach the fast-growing fire that was partially restricted by marsh and trees. The Port of New Orleans' Fireboat Gen. Kelley was requested at 8:59 pm to help fight the fire from the river side of the wharf followed by a subsequent second alarm at 9:31 pm. Unfortunately, barges docked directly in front of the burning wharf partially restricted the Gen. Kelley's ability to spray water streams directly on the fire. Eighteen NOFD units carrying fifty-five Fire Operations personnel were used in the mitigation of these incident. Although the fire has been placed under control as of 10:20 pm, fire crews will remain on the scene to ensure that this stubborn fire is extinguished completely. There were no injuries reported and the cause is being investigated.
