Here are the top 3 stories today in Des Moines: Last week, a record level of COVID-19 was detected in the Des Moines metro area's wastewater. These high levels suggest that the recent surge of cases due to the omicron variant may be underreported in testing statistics. Notably, the state of Iowa does not plan to enforce a federal vaccine mandate. (Axios) The Des Moines Fire Department is trying to reduce the cancer risk for crews. The department has made large investments to reduce the risk of occupational cancer, such as creating a garage that housed the trucks completely separated from the living quarters. A new station also has an improved alarm system that alerts firefighters in a healthier way. A crisis line counselor from the east coast alerted Des Moines police after a person said they place multiple devices outside the church online.
