Description

We are looking forward to our next gathering: a potluck and nixtamalization demonstration! Our next mask-choice gathering is on the horizon, and will be on Sunday, January 10th from 1-4 PM at The Living Room (2368 Norwood Ave, Cincinnati, OH 45212. Note, if you attended our December gathering, we will be meeting in a different building-- look for the Living Room building just across the street!). This meeting will bring the opportunity to nourish ourselves, build community and learn! We will start with a potluck and short video. The topic of the video and discussion will be on how we can build a community that connects us through our daily interactions. Can we build relationships through sharing our time, skills and resources? This article provides an example of how others are doing this. After lunch, we will briefly discuss one of the dietary principles: proper preparation of grains to neutralize anti-nutrients. This will include a demonstration on the process of nixtamalization, the traditional method for transforming dry corn into products like hominy and masa. Nixtamalized corn will be available for sale, by PRE-ORDER ONLY. This product can be used to make cornbread, tamales, grits, polenta or anything else that utilizes corn. Prices are $8/quart or $4/pint and you may specify coarsely ground OR pozole (whole kernel). This is a fresh item. It is good in the refrigerator for a couple days. If you are not using it right away, freeze it. If you would like to try your hand at the nixtamalization process at home, Vicki also has locally grown Oaxacan Green heirloom corn (unprocessed, whole kernel) available for $10/pound. If you would like to place an order to pick-up at the meeting, please contact Vicki ([email protected]) by January 8th. MEETING AGENDA: 1. Potluck – bring a WAPF inspired dish. Please bring your own table setting (plate, bowl, cup, utensils, napkins, etc.) Participation is optional, but encouraged! 2. Video during potluck with brief discussion. 3. Nixtamalization demonstration. 4. Social hour! P.S. While some of you have been WAPFers for years, others are just beginning to dip a toe in the water. We highly encourage everyone to read through the Healthy 4 Life booklet. At least take a look at the first 7 pages to get a taste! As your local chapter team, we exist to educate, serve and discuss these things, so don't hesitate to bring questions!
