Have you given up on relationships?

I've been talking with people of all ages, and it seems many of them have either given up on finding a relationship, or actively avoid one because of the potential pitfalls. I'd like to get the perspective of both men and women. When you discuss dating and relationships with your friends, is there a general consensus that relationships aren't worth it? Do you (and most of your friends) avoid engagement completely, or stick to short term affairs? What would have to change for you to entertain the idea of a long-term relationship?
