SOUTH HUNTINGTON, NY — The South Huntington School District was named the 2021 'Humane School District Of The Year' by the Long Island Orchestrating for Nature (LION), according to a news release from the school district.
Each year, LION recognizes community members or companies who show tremendous efforts and dedication to preserving wildlife and nature. South Huntington became the first school district to receive the award, which was presented by John Di Leonardo, founder and president of LION.
South Huntington reached out to LION regarding a drain project the school district was working on in a nearby sump. LION joined with the school district to rescue about 20,000 tadpoles and minnows, 2,000 goldfish, and about 150 bullfrogs, DiLeonardo said.
