Here are the top stories today in Anchorage: An Anchorage man was sentenced to 57 months in prison and three years of supervised release for being a felon in possession of a firearm. On July 31, 2020, Ronald Fetuao Maefau, 45, drove a car to an Anchorage apartment complex and began firing multiple rounds into one of the units. Maefau had multiple prior felony convictions, including attempted murder, which made it illegal for him to possess a firearm. (Alaska Native News) Anchorage School District has shortened COVID-19 isolation to 5 days for students and staff who test positive. According to the CDC, isolation periods should end after five days only for those who have been fever-free without the help of fever-reducing medicine for at least 24 hours, and as long as "other symptoms have improved." The school's policy reflects this guideline. A five-day quarantine for unvaccinated staff and students who are close contacts of someone with COVID-19 is recommended, but not required.(Anchorage Daily News) Filing for Anchorage elected office starts at 8 a.m. on Jan. 14 and will end at 5 p.m., Jan. 28. Candidates may file at the Election Center or make an appointment to file at the Clerk's Office by calling 907-243-VOTE (8683). Candidates may also return their filing paperwork by email ([email protected]) or fax (907-343-4313). The April 5 Regular Municipal Election is using a mail-in-only voting system and registered voters will be mailed a ballot packet at least 21 days before the end of the election.
