MEDFORD, NY — Suffolk police are reaching out to the public for help in identifying a man who was struck by a car and killed while crossing North Ocean Avenue in Medford on Tuesday night. The man had been walking across the roadway at the intersection of Masonic Avenue when he was struck by a southbound 2003 Honda Civic at about 10:20 p.m., police said, adding that he was transported to Long Island Community Hospital in East Patchogue where he was pronounced dead. He is described as a white or Hispanic man, in his 30s, 5 feet 8 inches tall, and 172 lbs. He has an underbite, thick eyebrows, light brown eyes, a goatee, and a tattoo behind his left ear. The driver of the Honda, Daniel Avila-Canales, 26, of Medford, was not injured in the crash, but two passengers in his car were transported to the same hospital for treatment of "minor injuries," police said. His vehicle was impounded for a safety check, police said. Detectives are asking anyone with information about the victim's identity to contact the 5th Squad at 631-854-8552.
