Press release from Waukee Community School District: January 5, 2022 Recently, two high school math teachers, Jordan Edgerly and Neil Seeley were recognized for becoming National Board certified teachers. Both teachers worked diligently over the span of two years for their certification. The course includes four components that measure different elements of high-quality teaching: a standardized assessment of content knowledge as well as three portfolio entries that demonstrate various aspects of teaching practice. Both Mr. Edgerly and Mr. Seeley would highly encourage other teachers to branch out and get their certification. Mr. Edgerly describes the process as "rewarding, because you get to collaborate with other people that care about making themselves better at what they do." In addition, the teachers got a chance to live out the CCRS standards that they have been teaching their students. Mr. Edgerly states that his students invested more in their CCRS development because they actually saw it being used in the real world by their teacher. The teachers are not only rewarded with the satisfaction that their hard work is complete, but are also given an incentive for up to ten years for being National Board certified. Most importantly, the biggest prize received from the process was the opportunity to improve themselves as teachers. Mr. Seeley says that throughout the process, "you become a more reflective and intentional teacher." In addition to the two teachers completing their certification, Stephanie Groathouse and Jay Winter are halfway done with their National Board certification.
