OAK LAWN, IL — A carjacking suspect was taken into custody early Saturday morning, who had been holed up in a home for ten hours in a standoff with Oak Lawn police. Charges are pending. The incident unfolded late Friday afternoon when the Oak Lawn Police Department received a call that a vehicle taken in an aggravated vehicular hijacking in the 5100 block of West Chicago Avenue in the city was traced to Oak Lawn. An officer saw the vehicle parked on the street in the 9100 block of South Kedvale Avenue around 4:45 p.m. Two men were seen getting out of the vehicle and began walking away as the officer approached them. The pair ran away from the officer and entered a single-family home, police said. One of them dropped a backpack that was found to contain a loaded Glock 9mm handgun and the rightful vehicle owner's belongings. We are currently investigating a stolen vehicle in the 9100 block of Kedvale. Please avoid the area.— Oak Lawn Police Dept (@OakLawnPD) Police quickly established a perimeter around the house. Oak Lawn patrol officers and detectives were able to contact three adult women and five young children inside the house, police said. The women and children were safely removed from the house. Both ends of the 9100 block of South Kedvale Avenue were blocked off by police vehicles, focusing on a house in the middle of the block. OLPD is still in the area of 91st Pl and Kedvale investigating a carjacking out of Chicago. The neighborhood is secure and we will keep you updated. Thank you for your cooperation.— Oak Lawn Police Dept (@OakLawnPD) January 8, 2022 Throughout the evening, a police officer repeatedly called out over a public address system: "This is the Oak Lawn Police Department. Come to the front door with your hands up. You will not be harmed." During the standoff, officers carrying rifles could be seen moving around the home. Officers referred to the person holed up inside the house by his first name. A resident said officers had been outside the house since the late afternoon, calling for the man to come to the front door and show his hands "over and over." "We'd love to talk to you about the stolen car," the officer called out. "You can go to bond court in the morning and be home in the afternoon." After hours of working to resolve the incident peacefully and receiving no communication from the people inside the house, the Cook County State's Attorney's Office was contacted and a search warrant was obtained for the home. Before officers executed the search warrant, a suspect eventually exited the home and was taken into custody, police said. He was transported to the Oak Lawn police station. "The Cook County State's Attorney felony review was extremely helpful in obtaining the search warrant," said Div. Chief Gerald Vetter, of the Oak Lawn Police Department. Oak Lawn police officers and members of the special response team entered the home and secured the location. Just after 3 a.m. Saturday, Oak Lawn police tweeted that officers had one person in custody. The scene at 9100/Kedvale is secure. We have taken one person into custody. Investigation is ongoing. We will be clearing shortly. Thank you for your cooperation and patience:— Oak Lawn Police Dept (@OakLawnPD) January 8, 2022 A second suspect, described as a male black, is still at large. The men's connection to the address is still unknown. A SMART 911 alert was sent out to residents in the area. "It's going to be a long day for our guys investigating this," Vetter told Patch. "There's a lot of legwork that still needs to be done." The investigation remains active and charges are still pending. More information will be released once the investigation has concluded.
