Press release from Stark County District Library: 01/07/2022 Winter is the perfect time to curl up with a good book and a cup of tea or hot chocolate. This winter has been more challenging than most, so you may need a blanket (or a cave), too! Whether you're looking for something to keep the kids engaged at home or just something to lift your spirits, we suggest a good book. Read for a Better World January 10 - February 12 The theme for this year's Winter Reading Challenge – #ReadforaBetterWorld – encourages you to read to take your imagination to new places and allow you to see things through the eyes of others. By understanding more about the world around us, we can make better choices and help build stronger communities. We challenge you to read at least ten books and complete at least five activities during the challenge. Here's how to participate! How to Participate Register your whole family at Beanstack to track your reading! You can do this on your computer or on Beanstack's mobile app. Each family member can sign up for their reading program to start logging their progress. Then, just start reading to earn tickets for a drawing at the end of the challenge! And the prizes are great! How to Earn Tickets You'll earn one ticket for every five books you read and additional tickets for completing up to six activity badges. You can earn up to eight tickets during the challenge – that's eight chances to win! What to Read Don't know where to start? You are welcome to read whatever you wish during the program, but if you need a little inspiration, we're here to help. Visit your librarian and they'll be glad to make some suggestions. If you can't come into the library, just give us a call!  What are the activities? Each activity badge has several different options: Best of Me! Badge It's important to feel good about yourself from the inside out! Identity is the collection of traits and characteristics that make you YOU. These include how you look, your personality, your culture, and your abilities. Big Feelings Badge Feelings are emotions that everyone experiences. Sometimes feelings can be big and overwhelming (or even scary). But all feelings are important! They give you information about what's going on around you. Celebrating Differences Badge "Diversity" means difference. Differences are good! They make every person special and unique. We are all different in many ways. This includes how we look, act, and talk. But it also includes where we live, what we eat, how we celebrate, what we believe, and much more! Perspective Badge Perspective is a point of view or way of seeing things. Perspective can apply to what we physically see. We may all be looking at the same object, but because we are looking from different places, we will all see the object from a different angle. Perspective also applies to how we feel about things. Prejudice and Assumptions Badge Prejudice means to "prejudge" someone. This means you make assumptions about another person without getting to know them. These assumptions might be based on how someone looks, a group they are a part of, or even your own experience. These assumptions may be positive or negative. But they are always unfair. We can't know what someone else likes or dislikes or what they are thinking or feeling unless we get to know them as an individual. The best way to get to know people is by asking respectful questions. Read for a Better World Badge Let's read together for a better world! Reading can take you to new places and allow you to see things through the eyes of others. By understanding more about the world around us, we can make better choices and help build stronger communities. What are the prizes? You could win one of six prizes! Magna-tiles, a tea basket, a $25 gift card to Amazon, a Build-a-Bear package, a $25 gift card to Books-a-Million, or a cozy book basket! Each ticket you earn gives you an entry into the drawing. The drawing will take place on February 16, 2022. Where to Read Not only can you find countless physical books at the library, you can also find books to read or listen to digitally on Libby or Hoopla, all free with your library card! Download the apps and instantly get access to thousands of books and audiobooks for free on your phone, tablet, or computer from wherever you may be! Take a look at our download page to get started!
