Milltown: Life in a Brunswick Tenement, taught by Carol Masterson
Back when Fort Andross was a huge textile mill, it was surrounded by buildings that housed the families of millworkers, primarily French-Canadian people who emigrated to the United States to work in the mills. Many families lived in a single building, called tenements. These buildings in Brunswick were owned by the mill company and were sometimes rundown.
In this session we'll explore what was life like for the families—especially kids—in the tenements. Well answer who took care of small children when parents were working? What was the condition of the buildings and how did that affect health and safety? What kind of foods and traditions did Franco-American families bring with them into their new homes?
