This year's event is being held in honor of K9 Hydro, who unexpectedly lost his life while on duty in November of 2021. K9 Hydro worked alongside Officer Mikac for 4 years to protect the City of Buffalo. Below, Officer Mikac remarks on the exceptional (albeit short) life of K9 Hydro, and how easy it was for this dog to touch the lives of many citizens of the City of Buffalo and beyond: -In Memory of K9 Hydro- "Besides being a Police K-9, Hydro was also a family dog. There were times when my kids and Hydro would howl back and forth, or he would try to climb in your lap and deliver a barrage of kisses. He would chase bubbles the kids were blowing or have a round of tug of war. Hydro helped sell our chickens eggs at the end of the driveway with the kids or have a late-night sit on the porch with his mom. Hydro would always let us know when it was time for me to bring him in so he can go to bed, and then let me know when he was awake! Hydro was always game to go to an ice cream place for a pup cup. Hydro would supervise the yard work we would be doing and then chew through his leash and give us a sideways mischievous glance! He was game for anything, always ready to play or work. Police dog Hydro is a different story... Hydro did his work with intensity, excellence, and would strive for perfection. On training days Hydro would want to be the first one to do everything, but his favorite was tracking. He was top of his class when it came to it. He tracked quickly and accurately, finding either his Kong or a suspect. He would quickly find a person hiding and alert me to their location or let me know when he found an explosive odor. Over the almost four short years we worked together, Hydro took 13 suspects into custody. As we worked as a team, we grew stronger and stronger. We had our “learning moments”, but no matter what they were, at the end of the day, it made us that much closer. I can’t help but smile every time I think back. Rest in peace Hydro."- Officer Mikac Lt. Baker and K9 PaddyK9 Paddy was named after fallen police officer Patricia Parete, she was shot in the line of duty and later died from those injuries she was an animal lover through and through and was very athletic. Paddy was also purchased by funds from the Buffalo marathon “ruffalo”. I have my the ultimate dream job and the best partner one could ask for! We look forward to seeing you all in the streets💯🐶🚔 Officer MikacK9 Handler Officer Stephen Mikac has been with the City of Buffalo Police Department for 14 years, 4 of which were alongside K9 Hydro. Since Hydro’s passing, Officer Mikac has continued to move forward as a handler. Although he is still mourning the unexpected loss of his partner, he will be greeting a new K9 partner this year thanks to the generous donations from the citizens of Buffalo during our previous “Blue Line for Buffalo” event.
