“The Empress of Soul,” Gladys Knight formed "The Pips" at the age of eight. They hit the Top Ten in 1961 with “Every Beat of My Heart.” They hit her stride when they moved to Motown in 1966. Steeped in gospel, they became one of Motown’s most dependable acts, with hits such as “Friendship Train” and the original “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” and her biggest, “Neither One of Us.” Moving to Buddah brought a string of hits, including the smash number one “Midnight Train to Georgia.”
