Description

Join GCPL for our Sundays in Suwanee series as historian Dr. D L Henderson discusses the history of Atlanta's segregated Oakland Cemetery. The story of Atlanta’s city cemetery has been told before but never from an Afrocentric perspective. Historically, Atlanta cemeteries operated by the laws and traditions of the living and separated the races—even in death. Dr. D L Henderson will discuss the history of Oakland's segregated landscape and the lives and deaths of its African American residents. Dr. D L Henderson is a historian, genealogist, preservationist, and author. She has received the Atlanta Urban Design Commission’s Jenny D. Thurston Memorial Award to an Outstanding Preservation Professional, and she has been recognized by the Atlanta City Council for her contribution to the preservation and interpretation of African American history and culture. She is the author of South-View: An African American City of the Dead. She is currently at work on an Afrocentric history of Oakland Cemetery. Free and open to all.
