Press release from Greater Fort Myers Chamber of Commerce: 2022-01-06 We can't wait to spark your imagination, inspire reflection and deepen connections among our community in the New Year and always. This January, join us for an upcoming event or theatre production, an art class or gallery exhibition! States of Being Exhibition In the Gallery January 7 – 29 • Carol Coates work conveys feeling states and is centered on issues of perception and choice. Her abstract pieces are visual tone poems. She uses Surreal, Classical, Minimal, and Abstract imagery to communicate. While the work varies in style, the content and aesthetics are constant. It can be poetic and dead serious or quirky and laced with humor. It is all from one heart and one mind. She hopes to evoke an emotional and empathic response from the viewer. Finally, she hopes to provoke thought and promote greater wisdom and justice. Alice Kiderman creates work that is a blend of the realistic and the abstract in shape, though she believes that the abstract is just an extension of the world around us. It is her hope that her sculpture evolves emotions and projects the victory of the spirit… untamed. See how the work of these two artists work together to explore what it is to be human, a state of being we all share. Opening Reception: This Friday January 7 from 5-7 p.m. See it first. See it free. This event is open to the public. Come meet your neighbors at this free event! The Colored Museum by George C. Wolfe and directed by Sonya McCarter Performances January 8 – 30 • The Colored Museum presents 11 "exhibits" which simultaneously celebrate, satirize and subvert the African-American legacy. Tony Award winner George C. Wolfe's groundbreaking play has electrified, discomforted, and delighted audiences of all colors, skewering stereotypes and redefining what it means to be black in contemporary America. According to Wolfe, the legacy of the past must be both embraced and overcome. This is an immersive theatrical experience where audiences will travel throughout the Alliance gallery and campus to visit each "exhibit." Ironically, the theatre will be the only space not used for the production. This production is sponsored by William & Shareen Groce and made possible by the National Endowment for the Arts. Please note: the approximate run time for this production is 90 minutes with no intermission. Guests will move throughout the Alliance for the Arts gallery and classrooms as scene change. Masks are required onsite the Alliance. Education Mixer Saturday, January 8 • Join us for a morning of fellowship and fine points! Whether you've been an Alliance Instructor for years or are interested in teaching your first class, we'd love to have you stop by and spend a bit of time meeting new staff and getting to know other instructors. We'll share the ins and outs of teaching at the Alliance, meet some new faces and see some familiar ones while enjoying light refreshments. While this event is free, an RSVP is required. Outdoor Bluegrass Concert (Pain In The Grass and HWY 41 S) Sunday, January 9 • Join fellow bluegrass music lovers for great live music by bands from southwest Florida and beyond! Our popular Palmgrass bluegrass concerts are always a toe-tapping good time. Free Art Activity: MLK Day Dreaming All Year Monday, January 17 • This activity is inspired by Martin Luther King Jr.'s powerful words to love our brothers and sisters and by the aesthetics of the 1960's Chicago-based AfriCOBRA art collective celebrating Black identity and culture. Martin Luther King Jr. encouraged us to dream and to work for a world with justice and equality. Let's honor Martin Luther King Jr. all year round by remembering his words and implementing them in our lives. This workshop is completely free to attend and participate, however an RSVP is required for every participant. All materials are included and artists are welcome to drop-in anytime between noon and 2 p.m. on Martin Luther King Jr. Day to engage in this educational and free workshop.
