The Running Edge 305 hosts a morning 5k run/walk to highlight the historic community of Overtown, Miami oldest Black community.
Background
Since 2018 we have been a participant in the Miami Half Marathon which. And each year we host a community run through a different historic neighborhood the Saturday before the race, as a way to welcome travelers to Miami and show them a more culture and authentic perspective of the city. We've highlighted Liberty City, Little Haiti and Overtown. This year, we'd like to host the run in Overtown, which is one of Miami's Oldest Historically Black Communities.
The Experience
Along the run we stop at historic landmarks and share the local history. Following the runs we support a local black owned business, Lil Greenhouse Cafe, as a way of contributing to the local economy, and to give visitors a taste of the city. In 2020 we had a great turnout, nearly 50 participants. This year we'd love to see more. Runners came from as far as Los Angeles, as many people are in town for the Miami Half Marathon Race.
Our shakeout run is the most authentic Miami experience that most runners that weekend will get. It makes their experience so much richer, something they'll alway remember about their time in Miami.
The home of D.A. Dorsey, Miami first black millionaire.
Overtown's Lyric Theatre, built in 1911 was where some of the greatest artists performed during the golden age jazz and blues.
