Stoneham Superintendent Retiring After 30+ Years In Education

STONEHAM, MA — Superintendent John Macero announced his retirement at Thursday night's School Committee meeting, bringing an end to more than three decades in public education. His retirement is effective Aug. 31. "I value Stoneham schools and the people who work in them," Macero said. "But most importantly, School Committee, I value you for the support you have given me and every member of the Stoneham school community during these difficult times of COVID. I look forward to establishing a smooth transition for our next superintendent of schools." Macero will pursue his passion for the arts, working with his wife in her performing arts school in Winthrop. Macero has worked in Everett, Saugus, Revere and Winthrop before Stoneham, where he served five years as superintendent — and even this week a teacher, as he has stepped in during dire staffing shortages fueled by COVID-19. He leaves having been a key part of the push to have Stoneham voters approve a Proposition 2 1/2 debt exclusion to fund a new $190 million high school. The school is scheduled to open in 2024. "We have a great program here. We have a great community," Macero said. "And it has been a true privilege to work in this community for the last five plus years. And I know that it's only going to get better and better with the new project of the school coming and everything. "You folks who have given your time, your dedication, your leadership, during the most difficult time for any School Committee, to me, has been to me an inspiration," he continued. "So thank you."
