Description
KENT ISLAND, MD — A helicopter airlifted a crew member Wednesday from a ship in the Chesapeake Bay, a press release announced. The chopper flew the patient to the Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis for treatment of their health emergency.
The U.S. Coast Guard said the patient's condition prevented them from boarding a smaller boat. Around 8:45 a.m., the first responders requested a medevac helicopter based at Easton Airport in Talbot County.
Maryland State Police Aviation Command Trooper 6 flew out to the Liberian ship, named Chem Jupiter. The chopper caught up with the 462-foot oil and chemical tanker near Bloody Point off the coast of Kent Island.
The helicopter steadied itself above the ship, which was moving north at 12 knots, while communicating with the tanker captain and the Coast Guard. A medic then lowered to the ship, harnessed the patient and hoisted them to the chopper.
