Press release from City of Fort Worth: January 06, 2022 This is the first in a series of articles discussing projects proposed in the May 2022 Bond election. Cromwell-Marine Creek Road is a critical regional arterial that connects Boat Club Road to Marine Creek Parkway in north Fort Worth. Included in this proposed widening project are intersection capacity improvements at Huffines Boulevard, Bowman Roberts Road and Marine Creek Parkway. The City of Fort Worth has received funding assistance from Tarrant County through the Tarrant County 2021 Transportation Bond Program Call for Projects for this regionally significant arterial. Design for this project began as intersection improvements in the form of roundabouts at Bowman Roberts Road and Huffines Boulevard with associated infrastructure and rehabilitation of existing travel lanes with the 2018 City of Fort Worth Bond Program. However, increasing transportation needs in this corridor required a higher-capacity improvement with more lanes than originally planned. Due to the critical need for this roadway, construction funding is included in the proposed 2022 Bond. If approved, this project is scheduled to begin construction in the fall of 2023. Completion of Cromwell-Marine Creek meets several goals: Cromwell-Marine Creek Road carries a high volume of daily commuter traffic due to the large number of single-family homes in adjacent subdivisions. It is also the first major east-west corridor north of Marine Creek Reservoir and IH-820. Cromwell-Marine Creek Road is projected to carry 45,480 vehicles per day, so widening the two-lane road is needed. To help plan for future growth along this roadway, the new median will be built wide enough to leave room for two additional travel lanes. This will make the construction process easier when the road needs to be widened to its final six-lane configuration in the future. The roadway will be widened and a median will be added to control access and to allow for turn lanes at intersections, increasing roadway capacity and reducing travel time. This project will also repair the poor pavement condition. Intersection capacity improvements and traffic signals are planned at Boat Club Road, Huffines Boulevard and Bowman Roberts Road. Roundabout modifications are planned at the intersection of Marine Creek Parkway to improve intersection flow and capacity. Improvements will enhance connectivity from Boat Club Road to Business 287 via Longhorn Road and to IH-820 via Marine Creek Parkway. Cromwell-Marine Creek Road will be widened with a raised median to control access and to allow for turn lanes at intersections, which will improve safety by reducing conflict points. Medians and turn lanes are proven safety countermeasures that will result in a significant reduction in crashes and help implement the City of Fort Worth's Vision Zero Plan. Major drainage improvements are planned for the Cromwell-Marine Creek Parkway project to improve hazardous locations. The city has developed a Hazardous Roadway Overtopping program that prioritizes improvement needs based on risk. A risk of hazardous road overtopping has been identified at Bowman Roberts Road and Cromwell-Marine Creek Road. In case of a major storm event, the risk for overtopping the road is a major safety concern for users and may cause traffic delays. Reconstructing this roadway will include building a culvert crossing large enough to carry a 100-year storm and raise the road outside of the floodplain, reducing the chances of hazardous roadway overtopping.
