NAPERVILLE, IL — Naperville police issued a warning to residents on social media about a current scam involving fake take-home coronavirus tests that are sold online.
The police department linked to a post from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) that offered tips to avoid falling for the fake coronavirus test scam. According to the FTC, the recent spike in coronavirus cases has prompted an increase in fraudulent tests.
The FTC recommends the following tips to avoid purchasing a fake coronavirus test online:
Ensure that the test has been authorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Research the seller online in a search that includes "scam" or "complaint" Visit a variety of online website to read reviews of the seller Use a credit card to pay and contact your credit card company if the test does not arrive or the test you receive is not as it was advertised. Residents can click the link to report coronavirus test scams.
