Suspicious Homeless Man Breaks Into Bluff St. House: Police

JOLIET, IL — Joliet police say a 34-year-old homeless resident faces several criminal charges following Thursday night's arrest in the 500 block of North Bluff Street. Officers hauled Melvin Ammons Jr. off in handcuffs charging him with criminal trespass to a residence, criminal trespass to state supported property, criminal damage to property and disorderly conduct. This marks Ammons' third arrest by Joliet police since August. A Will County judge set bail at $40,000 for Ammons. Around 10:40 p.m., Joliet police were sent to a house in the 500 block of North Bluff "for a suspicious person that had entered a residence without permission," police reports show. " Upon arrival, officers determined that Ammons had knocked at the rear door of the residence." The resident answered the door, but then realized he did not know Ammons, so he did not let Ammons inside, according to police. Although the resident then locked the door, "Ammons then forcefully entered the residence by damaging the rear door," Joliet police said. Officers found Ammons laying on the floor inside the residence at which time he was taken into custody without incident, police reports reflect. Although Joliet police identified Ammons as homeless, Will County Jail logs listed Ammons as being a resident of the apartment units in the 400 block of Western Avenue.
