Cancellation Extends Into Friday For Fairfax County Schools

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — Students had originally been scheduled to return from winter break on Monday, Jan. 3, but winter weather has pushed that return until next week at Fairfax County Public Schools. School is canceled for the fifth straight day on Friday, FCPS announced. The decision was made due to inclement weather in the forecast in Fairfax County Thursday night into Friday morning. The cancellations over the last four days have related to hazardous conditions continuing from Monday's winter storm. There will be no virtual or in-person learning on Friday. School offices will open on a two-hour delay, and central offices will open at 10 a.m. School Age Child Care centers are closed. Canceled activities at FCPS include extracurricular activities, interscholastic contests, team practices, field trips, middle school after-school programs, professional learning and training courses, Adult High School and GED, and recreation programs and community use by outside groups. Updates on COVID-19 testing sites will be provided Friday morning. The testing sites are intended for symptomatic students and staff only. Updates on school-based COVID-19 vaccination clinics for ages 5 to 11 will be provided here. Fairfax County and the region are under a winter weather advisory from 9 p.m. Thursday to 7 a.m. Friday. The National Weather Service expects 2 to 4 inches of snow with the heaviest snow overnight. Hazardous road conditions may impact the Friday morning commute. Gov. Ralph Northam issued a state of emergency in preparation for the next winter storm. There was no state of emergency for Monday's storm, which stranded many drivers on I-95 for more than 20 hours, caused widespread outages and heavy snow.
