LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA — COVID-19 booster shot appointments are now available for children as young as 12 in Loudoun County. The Loudoun County Health Department announced that they are scheduling booster shot appointments for younger children at their clinic at Dulles Town Center. Booster doses of the COVID-19 vaccines were approved for use in people aged 12 to 15 by the Centers for Disease Control and the Food and Drug Administration earlier this week. The Virginia Department of Health is also following CDC recommendations that would shorten the minimum amount of time between the initial dosage and the booster from six months to five months. Children between the ages of 5 and 11 who are immunocompromised will now be eligible for a third dose 28 days after their second dose. "Loudoun County, as well as our whole region, is now at the highest level of COVID-19 transmission," Loudoun County Health Director Dr. David Goodfriend said. "Those who are unvaccinated remain at the highest risk of severe illness and hospitalization due to COVID-19." On Thursday, Loudoun County recorded 876 new COVID-19 cases, according to data from the Virginia Department of Health. The 7-day average for new COVID-19 cases has now reached 843. Before the current surge, the all-time high for a 7-day average in Loudoun County was 324 per day in January 2021. Loudoun County residents can schedule an appointment for their booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine by visiting the county's website. Appointments can also be made by calling the county's information line at 703-737-8300. Have a story idea? Email me at [email protected] with tips, questions, comments, or concerns.
