Here are the top five stories today in Concord: The city of Concord's 716 miles of roads ranked in the "at-risk" category, according to the latest report on local road pavement conditions by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, which oversees transportation planning for the nine-county Bay Area. Concord roads scored 59 out of a possible 100 points, down 1 point from last year. Roads deemed "at-risk" — in the 50-59 range — may soon require major rehabilitation or reconstruction. The report reflected the average of data from the past three years. The most recent report included data from 2020 and was released late last year. (Concord Patch) Monument Impact recently celebrated its 20th anniversary of service to immigrant, refugee and undocumented Contra Costa residents. Debra Ballinger has led the nonprofit since January 2017. This week she announced her forthcoming retirement, effective July 31, 2022. "I'm honored to have led this important organization that is so deeply rooted in our immigrant community, supported by dedicated, creative staff to help residents struggling the most to thrive," Ballinger said. (Pioneer Publishers)Carondelet, Clayton Valley Charter and De La Salle high schools announced 19 senior student athletes signing their National Letters of Intent to play their sport starting next fall at 18 colleges from coast to coast. They were honored at on-campus signing ceremonies last month. The signees will be playing eight different sports in college including baseball, lacrosse, swimming, soccer, volleyball, basketball, softball and golf. (Pioneer Publishers)One person was reportedly briefly trapped in the smoking wreckage of a car on southbound I-680 in Pleasant Hill Tuesday. The crash was reported at 3:43 p.m. Witnesses reported seeing the car spin out and make contact with the right side barrier of the freeway before coming to rest – briefly catching fire. Crews were on hand to clean up the debris and tend to at least one person who reported injuries suffered in the collision. (News 24/680)The Discover Diablo hikes and outings series offers guided hikes and themed walks, mountain biking, rock climbing, and trail running events all free to the public. In response to growing demand, Save Mount Diablo is offering hikes as well as new activities in the series for a total of 36 excursions. New offerings will include a plein air painting walk and a trail run. The ever-popular tarantula walk will be offered twice, and the organization is offering three meditation hikes in 2022.
