SMITHTOWN, NY — The Smithtown Fire District is lending a hand to fellow first responders in the Mayfield, Kentucky, area after the Western part of the state was ravaged by a tornado in December.
Smithtown firefighters donated surplus equipment to the Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund, which will go to fire departments in Kentucky, said Rick Torre, Smithtown Fire District public information officer. Fire services and first responders were among those hampered by the tornado last month.
"We stand ready to help our Smithtown community and Long Island neighbors, as well as our brothers and sisters out of state," Smithtown Fire District Commissioner Michael McMahon stated.
The equipment given to Kentucky firefighters included more than 10 sets of bunker gear, lighting equipment, gloves, nozzles, fans, and a Hurst "Jaws of Life" extrication tool.
The Terry Farrell Fund is a not-for-profit organization set up to support fire departments and first responders across the country. Brian Farrell is the funds organizer and founder. He set up the organization in memory of his brother, Terry, who was an FDNY firefighter who was killed during the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
Farrell and other volunteers are set to transport the donated equipment to the Kentucky fire departments on Friday.
