NPD Assistant Chief Keith Carpenter told local media via press release on Thursday that the crash occurred at 8:25 p.m. Wednesday evening in the 4800 block of McFarland Boulevard. Carpenter said multiple agencies responded to the accident involving a 2012 Toyota Camry, driven by Luke Marlowe Smith, 62, of Coker and a 2011 Toyota Camry, driven by Heather Lynn Scott, 35, of Northport. He went on to say the preliminary investigation found that the vehicle driven by Smith was traveling east on McFarland Boulevard when he attempted to avoid striking a deer. Losing control of his vehicle, Smith reportedly crossed the median and struck the car driven by Scott as she travelled west on McFarland Boulevard. Smith and Scott both died from their injuries, Carpenter said. He then said the accident is still being investigated by Northport Police Department's Traffic Reconstruction Unit.
