Celebratory kickoff event to mark the 2022 AAHCF Supplemental Transition Education Program for Underrepresented Populations (STEP UP).
Join us as we celebrate the kickoff for STEP UP January 15! Under the leadership of Dr. Chandra Salaam, the African American History & Culture Foundation (AAHCF) is proud to present the kickoff for the 2022 Supplemental Transition Education Program for Underrepresented Populations (STEP UP)The STEP UP program provides direct services to youth as well as empowers parents with skills needed to be successful and effectively support their students. By improving the transition and post-secondary options, it seeks to improve the lives of numerous at-risk youth, directly improving the communities in which they reside.The kickoff event will include a student oration contest that honors the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.The MLK Oration Competition includes cash prizes for student participants in grades 6-12. Students will orate for 5 minutes each to the prompt: Is Dr. King's work still relevant in a Black Lives Matter Movement era? The competition will be decided by a select group of leaders. Awards will be presented to winners by six-time world boxing champion, Zab Juda. This event is free and open to the public. Tickets are not required to attend. Families of students are welcome! The kickoff will follow the organization's participation in the MLK Day parade and celebration at MLK Park located at 1950 Lemon Ave. Long Beach, CA 90806.
