Join us to look for a variety of wintering and resident birds while walking on easy, fairly level, dirt trails.
Note updated 8 AM start time! Pillar Point is a hot spot for birding year-round. We should find a variety of wintering and resident birds. Most of the walking will be on fairly level dirt trails, but if time permits, we may hike up onto the bluff top for a better view out to sea. Scopes will be useful here, so if you have one, bring it along. A primitive restroom is available at the parking lot. Rain or AQI over 150 cancels.
Note Updated Directions: The “Mavericks” parking lot below the Air Force Station is closed for construction through March 2021. The harbor is located just west of SR 1, 18 miles south of San Francisco and 4 miles north of Half Moon Bay. From SR 1, turn west at the stoplight at Capistrano Road and continue along the north side of the harbor to Prospect Way. Turn left onto Prospect, then a brief jog right on Broadway, to an immediate left on Harvard Avenue. Proceed through the boat yards to the end of Harvard Avenue, then turn right onto West Point Avenue. Go about 200 feet and stay left at the intersection of West Pointe Avenue and Stanford Avenue. Go about 400 more feet and park in a gravel parking lot on the right.
This parking lot is listed on Google maps as “West Point Parking (and identified as 22 West Point Avenue but there is no address shown at the parking lot). We will meet at the parking lot and walk towards the marsh and north side of the harbor. If the parking lot is full, be very careful to observe all “No Parking” signs on the nearby streets and do not block gates. Vehicles are commonly ticketed and towed in this area for disregarding signs or blocking gates. Coordinates are 37.50376840075714, -122.4946499556585
