Learn how to make a wonderful book with minimal supplies.
Sewn boards binding is a wonderful introductory binding structure. It requires minimum supplies and is easy to recreate at home. Students will come away from the class with a completed book and the knowledge to continue making this structure on their own.
Discussions of proper binding techniques, materials, and how to make the book "extra" will be had.
Students have the option of selecting lined, dot, or blank pages for their book. Please select the appopriate ticket at check out.
This is an IN-PERSON class. As such the following COVID protocols will be in place:

This class is taught by Mel Hewitt.
Mel Hewitt is a book artist working her way towards becoming proficient in all aspects of the book arts. Her skills currently lie in traditional and contemporary binding structures and finishing techniques, paper marbling, paste papers, and incorporating letter press, screen printing, and relief printing into her pieces. Mel’s work ranges from utilitarian one-of-a-kind journals to sculptural artist books. She is a board member of Spokane Print and Publishing Center where she also teaches classes on the book arts, and serves on the board for the Northwest Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers. SPPC is an immersive learning space dedicated to print, publishing, and creative play. We provide access to equipment, resources, and expertise to empower our students to execute their own print, book, writing, fabrication, and printing projects.
