34th Annual Speech -Language Pathology Spring Conference ULM Speech-Language Pathology Department is proud to host Dr. Kelly Farquharson at the 34th Annual Spring Conference. Dr. Kelly Farquharson is a speech-language pathologist and associate professor at Florida State University. She directs the Children’s Literacy and Speech Sound (CLaSS) Lab, which has a mission to help children with speech and language impairments achieve classroom success. Her research focuses on children with speech sound disorders and/ or dyslexia and ensuring that school-based clinicians are prepared to implement evidence-based practices for these children. Dr. Farquharson is also an affiliated faculty member in the Florida Center for Reading Research. Kelly Farquharson, PhD, CCC-SLP Associate Professor Florida State University Director: Children’s Literacy and Speech Sound (CLaSS) Lab [email protected] (850) 644-8465 Course: The importance of phonology and phonetics for reading, spelling, and speech sound production: Assessment and Treatment Implications for School-Based SLPs This 1.5 day workshop will review, in-depth, how phonology and phonetics are crucial for reading, spelling, and speech sound production. Children with speech sound disorders and/ or with dyslexia will be the primary population discussed. Research supporting evidence-based assessment and treatment practices will be embedded throughout. A heavy focus will include how to use phonetic and linguistic science to support target selection for speech sound disorders, and how to incorporate phonological awareness and orthography into speech-sound therapy sessions. Audience members will also be asked to reflect on their own experiences and consider how to advocate for better workloads in order to shift to new evidence-based practices. Learning Outcomes: Thursday February 24, 2022 1) describe the simple view of reading, as it relates to speech and language; 2) discuss the overlap between speech sound disorders and dyslexia; 3) explain orthographic awareness and the importance of using print in therapy sessions; 4) develop an approach to incorporating curriculum-based vocabulary into therapy sessions Friday February 25, 2022 5) identify one new approach to target selection; 6) describe how to use phonetic transcription as a clinical tool 7) identify new approaches for “making it work” in a school-based setting, including advocacy and avoiding burnout.
