MAHWAH, NJ — Elementary school students in Mahwah will get an extra hour or so of sleep on Wednesday, as icy conditions in the area of delayed the start of school by two hours.
Mahwah officials announced the decision Wednesday morning, which didn't affect start times at the middle or high school, due to the timing of the decision.
"The school district, for all elementary schools, K-5, will be operating on a two-hour delayed start time due to the recent shift in weather from snow to freezing rain, which resulted in icy conditions," officials said.
"The high school and middle school will be operating on their regular schedule due to the fact that their start time is now. Please take your time coming to school and drive safely," they added.
Mayor Jim Wysocki took to Facebook to urge residents on the roads to take things slow.
"Please use caution when driving. With the colder temperatures and the cold surface temperatures roadways and sidewalks will be refreezing," he said.
On Wednesday morning, the National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory statewide as freezing rain fell on slippery sidewalks, roads and bridges.
"Temperatures are warming across the area. There may still be lingering ice patches overuntreated surfaces," the weather service said. "Travel with caution the rest of the morning."
Speed limits on the New Jersey Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway have been reduced to 45 mph due to slippery conditions as crews salt the roads, according to 511nj.org.
