WOONSOCKET, RI — Coronavirus cases continue to skyrocket in the U.S., but coronavirus hospitalizations haven't risen as quickly so far. Still, hospital systems across the country are feeling the stress from additional patients. Nationally, about 76 percent of all inpatient hospital beds were occupied as of Jan. 4, and about 16 percent of all beds were occupied by patients with COVID-19, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Intensive care unit beds are also filling up, with 78 percent occupied nationally. About 26 percent of ICU beds are occupied by COVID-19 patients. More than 85 percent of ICU beds were filled in nine states plus Washington, D.C. COVID-19 patients accounted for more than a third of ICU beds in 14 states. State health officials in Rhode Island reported to the federal government Jan. 4 that approximately 85 percent of inpatient beds and 89 percent of intensive care unit beds in hospitals across the state were occupied. Around 19 percent of inpatient beds and 37 percent of ICU beds statewide were filled by COVID-19 patients, they reported. There was a daily total average of 74,318 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 between Dec. 26-Jan.1, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That is 17.5 percent higher than the prior seven-day average, but still 40 percent lower than the peak of COVID-19 hospitalizations in January 2020. The latest hospitalization numbers from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for Providence County, included below, are from Dec. 24-30, and represent a rolling seven-day average. Note that the figures for occupied hospital beds sometimes exceed 100 percent; this is because more than one patient sometimes occupies a bed over the course of a week. Below are the latest figures for hospitals in Providence County. Can't find the hospital you're looking for? Try searching for it here.
