JOLIET, IL — Ever since the owner of Louis' Family Restaurant retired in late November, Joliet's Jefferson Plaza has been dormant. But with a new year here, things are on the upswing. Antoine Matthews Jr. and his father Antoine Matthews Sr. are nearing the grand opening for their gym shoe and sports apparel store called Nu Sole. They're filling the storefront vacancy of West Side Music Center, 1009 West Jefferson St. "We're shooting for the end of January, but it could be February," Antoine Matthews Jr. told Joliet Patch's editor during Wednesday's phone interview. Nu Sole will sell basketball shoes and tennis shoes including Nike, Air Jordan, Adidas, New Balance and more. The new retail store will sell jogging suits, windbreakers and other sportswear. The vast majority of shoes for sale at Nu Sole will be brand new. Nu Sole will offer a shoe repair and restoration service, Matthews said. There will be three different services. One will be for gym shoes needing a cleaning. A second will be a full-restoration for shoes that are "beat up" or "look terrible." The third will be a full reconstruction service for shoes in need of a complete overhaul. The father and son business partners plan to be open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. "I love the location," Antoine Matthews Jr. remarked. "It's right on the main street, and it's easily visible." Matthews said he is originally from Cleveland, Ohio, and he moved to Joliet three years ago, because he has family here. The Nu Sole store will fill the vacancy left by the West Side Music Store in Joliet's Jefferson Plaza.
