EVERGREEN PARK, IL - Students in Tom Minarik's 'Ceramics, Sculpture and Jewelry' class (C.S.J.) at Evergreen Park Community High School created new glass pendants using a microwave as part of their jewelry unit this week. The project is a STEAM activity, which have become more common as the advances in education focus on the connections between all subjects. Minarik said the students were able to see how a microwave, traditionally used to heat food, is able to heat up to 1,500 degrees to melt glass. The special kiln traps the microwave's heat, creating enough heat to melt the glass. Take a look at some of the cool creations:
