CHICAGO HEIGHTS, IL — The littlest member of the Zarlengo family Italian ice business has a very big role, according to a report from ABC7 Chicago.
Aria Zarlengo, the toddler granddaughter to the founder of Chicago Heights-based Zarlengo's Italian Ice & Gelato, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes over a year ago. Since then, her family has worked to create healthier versions of their famous sweet treats without the added sugar.
According to Zarlengo's website, the company now sells Aria-approved ice cream sandwiches, Italian ice and ice cream cups that claim to not raise glucose levels in those who are watching their blood sugar. A portion of proceeds from the products go to help fund research on Type 1 diabetes at Washington University School of Medicine.
