OAKLAND, CA — An Alameda County Sheriff's Office recruit was murdered while driving home from work Tuesday night, the sheriff's office said.
The victim was a member of the police academy and was in his personal car and not in uniform when he was shot, ABC7 reported.
A unknown person fired gunshots into the recruit's car while he was driving home on 580 West near the Oakland Toll Plaza to the Bay Bridge, according to the ACSO. His car crashed after he was shot.
ABC7 reported the California Highway Patrol found the man's car around 4:30 p.m. and took him to a hospital, where he later died.
The sheriff's office has not released the victim's name at this time.
"This appears to be another senseless act of gun violence on a Bay Area Freeway," said Lt. Ray Kelly, the ACSO public information officer, in a Facebook post.
The California Highway Patrol will investigate the recruit's death.
