SPRINGVILLE, AL — Another candidate has entered the Alabama gubernatorial race, as Springville mayor Dave Thomas announced his intentions to run for the office Tuesday. Thomas made the announcement during the city's regular council meeting, according to the Trussville Tribune. Thomas looks to return to Montgomery, where from 1994 to 2002 he served in the Alabama Legislature. "This is not really city business, but it pertains to the city somewhat," Thomas said during the council meeting. "I am excited to announce that as of this morning, I became a candidate for the Republican nomination for governor." Thomas has served as Springville's mayor since 2020. He said among his main concerns for Alabama are eliminating the grocery tax and the gas tax and eventually discussing eliminating the state income tax. Thomas' announcement comes the same day that King's Home president Lew Burdette announced his candidacy for governor. In addition to Thomas and Burdette, the Republican primary now includes incumbent Gov. Kay Ivey; former U.S. Senate candidate Lynda Blanchard (who has been endorsed by former president Donald Trump); Stacy George, a former Morgan County Commissioner who ran for governor in 2014; Tim James, who has run twice for governor and is the son of former governor Fob James; east Alabama pastor Dean Odle; and current state auditor Jim Ziegler.
