PRINCETON, NJ — The special council meeting to discuss the possibility of a cannabis dispensary in Princeton, has now been postponed to spring. The meeting will "probably be rescheduled" in March, Councilwoman Eve Niedergang said in an email to the press. Niedergang is also the chair of the Cannabis Task Force (CTF). During the Dec. 16 meeting, the CTF said it was going forward with its recommendations to allow three medical and adult-use retail dispensaries in town. despite some pushback from residents. The special council meeting was expected to be held in January. An online petition opposing cannabis dispensaries near schools, playgrounds, and residential neighborhoods has received over 700 signatures. In Princeton, CTF recommends that all marijuana retailers be subject to zoning restrictions similar to alcohol stores — at least 200 feet from schools. The petition however said that having dispensaries near schools, playgrounds, and residential neighborhoods, was "in violation of U.S. Federal law and common sense." Federal law requires a buffer of 1,000 feet for any cannabis dispensaries situated near schools. Princeton Public Schools too weighed in on the topic, releasing a "position statement," requesting Council to enforce "a buffer of 1,000 feet for any cannabis dispensaries" situated near schools.
