AUSTIN, TX — Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick tested positive for COVID-19 last week and is currently recovering in quarantine, according to a statement from his campaign Monday.
Patrick's reelection campaign announced on Monday that he experienced mild symptoms last week and tested positive for the virus. Though he has since tested negative, he is still isolating in his home in Houston, a press release from his campaign said.
No one else in Patrick's household was infected. Officials said he is working from home and will return to his public schedule by the end of the week, according to his senior campaign advisor.
Patrick has previously said that he is vaccinated but has also been critical of shutdowns related to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to The Dallas Morning News.
The Texas Department of State Health Services reported 10,892 new confirmed cases as of its last update on Dec. 30.
Last week, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced that the state asked for federal assistance to help with COVID-19 testing and treatment as the highly contagious omicron variant fuels a surge in infections.
The state officially ran out of monoclonal antibodies, a key treatment to fight the omicron COVID-19 variant, which now makes up 90 percent of the virus cases statewide, last week as cases spiked.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the omicron variant made up more than 58 percent of COVID-19 cases nationwide as of Dec. 25. This is more than the delta variant, which only makes up 41.1 percent.
