HOBOKEN, NJ — The city of Hoboken said Monday that due to unprecedented COVID numbers, Wednesday's City Council meeting (originally slated to be the first in-person meeting in nearly two years) will now be virtual, and city employees will work remotely until Monday. This past December, the city saw the most COVID cases in any month of the pandemic, the city said. From Dec. 1 through Dec. 31, a total of 1,599 residents tested positive, they said. The easily transmissible omicron variant is causing cases to ramp up, and the delta variant is still in play and has been causing hospitalizations and deaths since summer. The cases have resulted in staff shortages in hospitals and schools throughout the area. "Since Dec. 20, nearly 50 municipal employees have tested positive for COVID-19 or had to quarantine following contact with an individual who tested positive," said the city. "As such, all non-essential municipal employees are on a remote work schedule until Jan. 9."
