ELMHURST, IL — Elmhurst Hospital on Monday was treating its largest number of coronavirus patients during the pandemic, according to its latest numbers. The hospital reported 85 patients with confirmed cases of COVID-19, with the number climbing since late November. The hospital's last record was on Nov. 17, 2020, with 84 patients. Of the hospital's patients, 52 were unvaccinated, 29 were vaccinated and two were partially vaccinated. The hospital has not collected or posted data for the two remaining patients. Proportionately, at least a third of the patients were vaccinated. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 222 people have died from the coronavirus at the hospital. Two of the deaths were in the last four days, according to the hospital. While coronavirus cases have increased a lot recently, the number of deaths is far lower than previous surges. Since March 2020, the hospital has discharged 2,405 COVID-19 patients. Elmhurst Hospital is far from alone in its latest experience. On Monday, its sister institution in Naperville, Edward Hospital, also reported a record, with 113 coronavirus patients. Elmhurst Hospital serves an area far larger than Elmhurst. But the city's numbers are an indicator of what's happening. Last week, Elmhurst experienced 529 new coronavirus cases, the highest weekly number during the pandemic. The previous local record was 336 cases a week earlier.
