WORCESTER, MA — Local residents are rallying around a Worcester high school principal who was recently diagnosed with a serious form of cancer.
North High School assistant principal Meghan Milonopoulos was diagnosed with colon cancer in late 2021 and immediately began an aggressive chemotherapy routine that will prevent her from returning to work.
Supporters on Friday started a GoFundMe fundraiser for Milonopoulos and have quickly raised close to $80,000 against a $90,000 goal. The money will help pay for medical treatments and daily expenses for her family, which includes three young children.
According to Milonopoulos, she began feeling sick after giving birth to her son, Mathaios, five months ago. After a battery of tests, she was officially diagnosed on Dec. 17 with stage 4 colon cancer and was told she might live for one two five years.
She began receiving chemotherapy on Dec. 23, and has experienced serious side effects, which means more hospital visits coming up.
"I am grateful for the tremendous support, words of encouragement, food deliveries, gift cards, etc. that I have already received in such a short amount of time," Milonopoulos said in a Jan. 2 update. "Although it is going to be a long road with an uncertain outcome, I am ready for the fight, and I am going to push through as best as I can. I have three beautiful children and an incredible husband who need me … I have no choice!"
