Description
Razom for Ukraine invites you to the exclusive curator-led tour of the Ukrainian art exhibition at the Zimmerli Art Museum Razom for Ukraine invites you to the exclusive curator-led tour of the Ukrainian art exhibition followed by the reception in support of the Ukrainian art programming at the Zimmerli Art Museum, New Brunswick, New Jersey. The Zimmerli houses one of the best collections of Soviet Nonconformist Art. A large part of this collection is art from Ukraine, and this aspect of the collection is explored in its current exhibition Painting in Excess: Kyiv Art’s Revival, 1985-1993. This exhibition is dedicated to the period of perestroika and the collapse of the Soviet Union that radically transformed the art scene of Kyiv. It launched Ukrainian contemporary art as a truly global phenomenon and changed Kyiv from the backwater province into a new art capital, preparing the city for the new role of the emerging state’s capital. The tour will introduce the major art styles blossoming in Kyiv at the time against the background of the collapsing Soviet Empire, economic scarcity, and Chornobyl catastrophe. The tour will be led by Olena Martynyuk, PhD, Guest Research Curator of the show and a postdoctoral fellow in Ukrainian Studies at the Harriman Institute of Columbia University. Please note that the museum is located on the campus of Rutgers University. The Zimmerli is a short walk from the NJTransit New Brunswick train station, midway between New York City and Philadelphia. Once you leave the station, walk one block north on College Avenue to Hamilton Street. Then walk one block east to get to the museum. As this is a special small tour, tickets for this event are limited. Ticket to the museum tour and lunch: $100 ($75 tax deductible).
