Meet the Wilderness brewers, taste some vintage wild ales, and experience the creation of a spontaneously fermented beer first-hand. One of the most special beers we make here at AZ Wilderness is Camp Coolship, an ale that draws from Belgian lambic-brewing tradition to make use of yeast and bacteria that float wild and free in the air. But unlike the Belgians, who keep their coolships stationary, we prefer to hitch ours to the back of a pickup truck, fill it with beer brewed that day, and drive it out somewhere in the wilderness to spend the night with the liquid exposed to the air, allowing wild yeast to inoculate the beer and begin to ferment it. We call these beers Camp Coolship because we've traditionally taken a small group of brewer friends with us to camp out, tell stories, and drink lots of beer while letting the yeast do its thing. But for this batch—and for the first time ever—we’re offering our fans the chance to be part of the Camp Coolship experience. Join the Wilderness brewers from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28 at the citrus orchard at Agritopia Farm for the first Camp Coolship of 2022. Our brewers will be hanging out to answer questions, demonstrate how the coolship works, and pour free samples from rare and vintage bottles we found in our Woodnotes Cellar. A guitar and campsite songs might even break out. You never know what’ll happen at Camp Coolship. There’s no charge to attend, but you must RSVP. Send any questions to [email protected].
