Sun, Jan 30, 5:30 pm Free, open to the public On the eve of Philip Glass’ 85th birthday, The Great Northern honors the unprecedented impact the composer has had on the musical and intellectual life of his times with a gigantic outdoor screening of his cult classic film KOYAANISQATSI projected onto Minneapolis’ iconic United Crushers Mill. Created between 1975 and 1982 by Glass and first-time director Godfrey Reggio, KOYAANISQATSI is an apocalyptic vision of the collision of two different worlds—urban life and technology versus the environment. Glass’s favorite pizza (potato), specialty cocktails, and vegan cake will be served in the composer’s honor. “The quintessential environmental movie—a transformative meditation on the current imbalance between humans and the wider world that supports them.” —The Guardian Ko.yaa.nis.qatsi (from the Hopi language), n. 1. Crazy life. 2. Life in turmoil. 3. Life disintegrating. 4. Life out of balance. 5. A state of life that calls for another way of living.
