TAMPA BAY, FL — As the year comes to a close, how'd you do with your 2021 resolutions? If you still have items on your list that you didn't finish yet, there is still time. Health and finances topped the list but people also reported a desire to build better relationships, getting out of their comfort zones and planning the trip of a lifetime. Not surprisingly, the number one goal for 2021 has been improving health. Creating a healthy lifestyle can mean a lot of different things, depending on your starting point. Did you start an exercise program or swear to eat better? Limit drinking or stop smoking? It can be overwhelming to change many habits at once, so if one of these items was on your list, start today but keep the task small and build on it. If you want to limit your drinking and you drink two glasses of wine every night with dinner, start small and limit it to one for a week, then the following week, try skipping a day in between. And, remember it's progress, not perfection. Improving your finances is another popular resolution. It won't happen overnight, but once you decide on your most important priority - cutting down on spending, increasing your savings or paying down debt, it will seem more manageable. Creating financial security will help your overall health and wellness and that helps your health resolution too! Getting things in order is also a popular resolution. Take time to look through your insurance policies and update if necessary. Also consider thinking about what would happen if you became serious ill? Who would speak on your behalf? Do they know what type of medical treatments you want or don't want? If you haven't thought about advance care planning previously, or have put it off, now is a good time to start the introspection and conversations with your loved ones. Five Wishes, a workbook, that turns into a legal document, can help you through the process. If your goal was to get out of your comfort zone, deciding on what to do may be the hardest part. Is it taking up guitar, learning calligraphy, or starting to train for a marathon? Pick one and create a reasonable plan for 2022. Just getting started before the year-end will be an accomplishment.
